Manufactured in the USA

To better meet the growing needs of our customers and requirements set forth by government-funded projects, Superior Tank offers AIS & Buy American-compliant steel storage tanks. Available to both our national and international customers, purchasing a Buy-American or AIS compliant storage tank ensures that your storage tank has met the statutes and requirements laid out by each of these certifications. Used for municipal, government, DSA, and other public works projects, these certifications provide proof that the materials used to manufacture the storage tank, as well as the manufacturing process itself, takes place in the United States. This ensures a higher standard of quality, greater safety standard, use of more advanced technology, reduced costs for delivery and protection of American jobs

Buy-American

In meeting the statutes outlined in the Buy American Act, Superior Tank has the ability to offer an above-ground steel storage tank which is considered a “domestic end product.” Being considered a “domestic end product” involves passing a two-part test focused on the manufacturing location & process of our bolted and welded steel storage tanks. To learn more about this two-part test and how Superior Tank complies with the Buy American Act, please visit our Buy American Compliance page.

Customers may request Certified Material Test Reports (MTR’s) in order to comply with any project regulations or provisions which require completed testing and analysis on the materials used to construct the steel storage tank.

American Iron & Steel Compliance (AIS)

Compliance with the American Iron & Steel (AIS) provision is an essential part of receiving funding from various State Revolving Funds for the construction, alteration, maintenance, or repair of a public water system or wastewater treatment project. In utilizing the National Product Waiver of Minor Components in Iron & Steel Products, AIS ensures that “all manufacturing processes, including application of coatings, must take place in the US […] All manufacturing processes include processes such as melting, refining, forming, rolling, drawing, finishing, fabrication and coating.” (EPA Memo, Page 6). This waiver confirms Superior Tank’s ability to comply with the American Iron & Steel provisions and provide a storage tank certified to receive funding from State Revolving Funds. Additionally, Superior Tank can provide a signed AIS Letter of Certification stating the product’s full compliance with all AIS provisions and subsequent statutes.

For more information on the State Revolving Fund American Iron & Steel (AIS) Requirement and how Superior Tank complies with these requirements, visit our AIS Compliance page.

Please be aware that notice of Buy American or AIS-compliance must be made known to your Superior Tank Sales Representative at the time of quotation and ordering in order to properly prepare all documentation and materials prior to beginning manufacturing.

Standard Update for Potable Water Coatings!

NSF Updates

On January 1, 2023, NSF. Std. 61 will be updating its requirements for potable water coatings and linings to the new standard, NSF/ANSI/Can Std. 600 or NSF 600. NSF 600 will require all coatings, which come in contact with potable water, to greatly reduce the extracted levels of solvents present in the coatings.

This is nothing new for Superior Tank.

For the last 35 years, we have continued to offer our customers the highest-grade powder coatings on the market, which are prepared to meet and exceed the ever-changing standards & project requirements laid out by various industries and applications. As the pioneers in applying powder coatings to the bolted steel tank, we possess the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure your storage tank remains in-tact and functional, while its contents remain clean and free of contamination.

It is our job, as your storage tank provider, to stay up-to-date on changing industry regulations – so you don’t have to. This couldn’t be more important for industries such as potable water. Providing potable water storage tanks, which supply drinking water to municipalities, water districts and communities across the US and the world, remains a large part of our business here at Superior Tank. It is extremely important that our customers understand that we are and will always keep our customer informed regarding any potential changes to rules & regulations affecting the consumption of potable, or drinking, water.

In this case, it is the update from the widely known NSF. Std. 61 to the NSF. Std. 600 standard. With the NSF. 600 standard update, customers can expect to receive a coating system which displays the following characteristics when storing drinking water:

  • 100% Solids
  • Zero Solvents
  • Zero VOC’s

Additionally, unlike many other types of storage tanks, a Superior Tank factory powder coated bolted steel storage tank does NOT require a rubber or PVC liner – which means more money in your pocket!

The reason our bolted steel storage tanks don’t require a liner… our interior epoxy powder coating, Tank Tan. Tank Tan is the industry-leading thermosetting fusion-bonded epoxy powder coating system which meets both NSF. 61/600 certifications and has outstanding chemical and corrosion resistant properties. Together with our innovative SiZr seal for added protection, a Superior Tank bolted steel storage tank serves the perfect storage solution for your potable water storage needs.

API Composite: Where Consistency in Quality Matters

The American Petroleum Institute (API) represents the largest trade organization of the oil and natural gas industries in the United States. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., API represents over 650 corporations which are directly involved in producing, processing and distributing much of the nation’s energy.

In supporting many organizations and jobs throughout the petroleum industry, safety has proven itself to be one of the primary focuses of API. Through the maintaining of more than 700 safety standards and recommended best practices across a wide range of equipment and operational processes, the American Petroleum Institute has had a sizeable impact on both state and federal regulations. In doing so, API developed the ability to design its own safety and certification programs, which verifies the compliance of organizations across industry standards and management systems.

Depending on the type of certification an organization is looking to obtain, API offers various programs which focus on the different facets of the oil and natural gas industry – from manufacturing to health and safety management. For us here at Superior Tank, obtaining the prestigious API Monogram for our API-12B bolted steel storage tanks was an incredible accomplishment, as only two storage tank manufacturers in the world have been accredited with this certification.

Complementing our API Monogram license, our corporate manufacturing facility in Rancho Cucamonga, California was certified with the API Spec Q1 license. This ensures that all products manufactured by Superior Tank at our corporate facility are in full compliance of product quality and management systems outlined by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) for ISO 9001 requirements. These certifications and licenses are a true testament to the commitment to quality and dedication shown by all of our employees to provide our customers with the most advanced and cost-effective bolted steel storage tank.

Through the successful procurement of the following standards (as found on the API Composite List), Superior Tank’s ability to consistently provide high-quality and reliable API certified products to our customers through quality management systems remains unmatched against a majority of the industry.

With decades of experience in the crude oil and petroleum industry, Superior Tank is and continues to be the preferred storage tank provider for many small- and large-scale oil providers. Quality, durability and functionality of our storage tanks are never compromised, and our ability to maintain these rigorous certifications proves just that.

SERVICING THE GLOBE

As a multinational organization, we place a heavy importance on the trust and relationships built with each of our national and international customers. Unlike many storage tank manufacturers in the industry, Superior Tank does more than just sell you a tank or place you in the hands of a dealer; we stay with you throughout the entire duration of the project. Each customer is offered a variety of resources and services which provides assistance through the installation process, ensuring a safe and timely erection of your new storage tank. Focusing on our international clients, we offer export & shipping services, purchasing of containers and tool kits, as well as the hiring of an installation supervisor.

Furnishing a non-working Supervisor to oversee the installation of your new bolted steel storage tank has countless benefits. You receive both a knowledgeable and seasoned foreman to lead your installation team, as well as the support of the Superior Tank team. There are many instances where the customer has the labor to install the tank(s), but is lacking the knowledge and/or experience of a seasoned foreman to oversee the assembly – this is where we come in. In providing each of our international customers the option to hire an experienced Supervisor, we begin to build a partnership based on trust and mutual respect, allowing your labor crew to feel confident in their ability to complete the tank project successfully.

One of the most prevalent benefits to our international customers in owning a Superior Tank factory powder coated bolted steel tank, is the ease of installation. Once our bolted tank leaves the manufacturing facility, all that is required on the job site is to bolt the prefabricated and precoated tank parts together. No welding. No onsite rework. No grinding. No specialized equipment. No sandblasting. No painting. With the assistance of an unskilled labor force and the recommended tools and hardware list, which is also available for purchase, we make the installation process as simple as possible for wherever you are in the world.

With decades of experience working alongside our international customers, we possess the necessary tools and experience to make the shipping and installation process as easy as possible. Some of our latest achievements include providing supervisory services for bolted tank projects in Kenya, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Japan, Qatar and Chile. Our presence in these countries only serves to showcase how far our capabilities expand and the global impact the Superior Tank brand has on the potable water, fire protection, wastewater and crude oil industries. Whether it be providing potable water for a small village or servicing a 38MW Hydrocarbon Power Plant, there truly is no limit to where our Factory Powder Coated or Hot Dipped Galvanized bolted steel tanks can be of service. The quality and operating life of a storage tank is only as good as the Company who stands behind their product.

Changes to ladder safety requirements have arrived!

The Federal OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Standards requirements for fall protection on fixed ladders were revised in October of 2016 with some new requirements becoming effective after November 19, 2018. This revision relates to all ladders including those installed on bolted and welded steel ground storage tanks. All new ladders installed after November 19, 2018 extending over 24’ above a lower level must include a ladder safety or personal fall arrest system. Existing ladders, defined as ladders installed before November 19, 2018 must be equipped with one of the following items: ladder cage, ladder safety system or personal fall arrest system. All new ladders installed after November 19, 2018 will not be able to use a ladder cage as the exclusive fall protection method. Ladder cages will still be able to be used provided they are combined with a primary fall protection method such as a ladder safety or fall arrest system and the cage does not interfere with the primary system. After November, 19, 2036 all existing ladders not in compliance with the requirements for new ladders will need to be retrofitted to have either a ladder safety or personal fall arrest system.

A ladder safety system is designed to eliminate the possibility of your employees falling from the ladder. Similarly, a fall arrest system stops the fall before the worker impacts the surface below.

Ladder Safety Systems Commonly Includes

  • Lanyard
  • Connectors
  • Body harness
  • Carrier
  • Safety sleeve

Fall Arrest Systems Commonly Includes

  • Lanyard
  • Connectors
  • Body harness
  • Positioning system
  • Travel restraint system/deacceleration device

Ladder Cages Commonly Includes

  • Enclosure surrounding climbing space of ladder

For all new and existing fixed ladders with heights less than 24’ above a lower level, no fall protection is required by OSHA but ladder cages, ladder safety systems, or fall arrest systems can be used if desired.

Ladder Height and Installation Date Height above Lower Level Fall Protection Required Ladder Cage Ladder Safety System Fall Arrest System
Existing Ladders (installed before 11/19/18) >24′ Yes M M M
New Ladders (installed after 11/19/18) >24′ Yes O ² M M
All Ladders after 11/19/36 >24′ Yes O ² M M
All Ladders ≤ 24′ No O O O

O = Optional, Not Required
M = Meets OSHA Requirement
¹ Only 1 of the acceptable fall protection methods is needed to satisfy OSHA requirements
² Cannot be used exclusively, Must be combined with Ladder Safety System or Fall Arrest System

Another change in the regulation is the requirement of resting platforms. After November 19, resting platforms are required at maximum 50’ intervals when a cage is used and 150’ maximum intervals when a personal fall arrest or ladder safety system is used. Under the old regulation the maximum distance was only 30’ for each segment and if a safety device was used on a ladder for tower, water tank or chimney, a platform was not required at all.

In addition to ladder systems, Superior Tank offers other equipment to keep your workers safe while working with ground storage tanks. For example, tie-points at various locations on the tank such as around the roof hatch provide a suitable anchor for fall protection systems. Also, extending roof railing and installing OSHA required self-closing gates at openings can also prevent worker falls.

Please note, your local regulations may differ as select areas have regulations independent of Federal OSHA Requirements.  Our safety experts can recommend the right equipment to prevent injuries to your workers and comply with OSHA requirements to avoid fines and penalties. Oil Companies Gain Competitive Advantage with Oil Storage

Steel Storage Tank for Oil storageWith the highly competitive nature of today’s oil industry, companies are searching for every advantage available. To gain a considerable lead, companies are using a proven storage solution with updated features.

The bolted steel tank for oil storage provides customers significant time and cost savings. Modern bolted steel storage tanks include innovative materials and processes to increase the durability of the steel tanks. New bolted steel oil tanks incorporate heavy duty Buna N gaskets which are specially designed for use with storage of oil and other hydrocarbon fluids. In addition, Superior Tank uses the same advanced powder coating which is used on steel oil pipelines thereby providing significant increases in the tank’s lifespan. Many years of success illustrate that modern bolted steel storage tanks work very well with oil storage without leaks or failure. Lifecycle cost analysis has shown bolted steel tanks meet or exceed the performance of welded steel tanks but at a much lower cost.

In addition, bolted steel tanks provide a significant time advantage as they can be erected in 1/3 of the time of welded steel oil storage tanks. The only work needed in the field is simply bolting the prefabricated panels together. Tank kits complete with Buna N gaskets and special hardware designed for the oil industry are shipped directly to the job site for fast and efficient assembly.

With the current focus on safety in the oil industry, many companies are also reaping the benefits of bolted steel tanks. Bolted steels tanks do not require welding on site, therefore the risk of a fire is dramatically reduced. As assembly is dramatically faster, fewer man hours are spent on scaffolding reach to upper levels thereby reducing fall potential. All bolted steel tanks are factory prefinished, consequently on site painting and the associated ventilation processes are eliminated.

When needed, bolted steel tanks also provide appreciable benefits when designed for storage of frac process water or frac sand storage.

As the oil industry continues to move forward, more companies are expected to gain a competitive advantage by using bolted steel storage tanks.
