Powder Coating

FACTORY POWDER COATED BOLTED STEEL TANKS

Superior Tank pioneered the use of factory powder coating on bolted steel storage tanks and our customers have been receiving the benefits ever since!

WHY CHOOSE POWDER COATING...

Our powder coating finish provides a number of advantages:

Powder Coating Bolted Tanks

A COATING FORMULA TO FIT YOUR NEEDS

We offer various powder coating formulas to meet your project requirements and for greater longevity:

Epoxy Powder Coating

EPOXY

NSF certified coating used on the inside of the tank for storage of water, wastewater and petrochemicals.

Skotchkote

NAP-GARD &
SCOTCHKOTE 134

Optional NSF certified coatings applied to the tank interior for storage of corrosive liquids including over 1000 chemicals and for additional corrosion protection.

TGIC Polyester

TGIC POLYESTER

Specially formulated for exterior applications, TGIC Polyester resists chalking and fading due to UV exposure.

WE ARE THE POWDER COATING EXPERTS

Powder coating differs from other coatings as the dry powder is applied to the tank components, then heat cured before the parts leave the factory. Superior Tank was the first to apply Thermoset Fusion Bonded Powder Coatings to Bolted Steel Storage Tanks and since then we have made significant investment in the latest technology and processes to ensure we provide an extremely durable finish. Our main powder coating line is over 500’ long with seven distinct stages.

After the steel tank parts are cleaned and prepared for coating using sandblasting to the Near White SSPC SP10/NACE No.2 standard, our SiZr seal is sprayed onto the steel providing a second layer of corrosion protection. Immediately after, we spray the dry powder coating onto the steel using specialized equipment to ensure proper application.

We use a small electrical charge to temporarily hold the powder to the steel until the coating is permanently thermoset in the ovens. This application process provides a smooth finish, free from drips and runs. The process also ensures all surfaces of the steel are completely coated, including hard to reach areas such as the top of roof rafters and the interior of pipes.

Our large ovens operate at approximately 350° and therefore we do not risk warping the steel staves which can occur when steel is exposed extreme temperatures. Before the steel staves are packed for shipping, they are holiday tested to ensure no voids exist.

SiZr SEAL. EXTRA DEFENSE AGAINST CORROSION.

To provide additional corrosion protection, we use a Silica & Zirconium (SiZr) liquid seal on all of our powder coated finishes. The seal is sprayed onto the prepared steel underneath the powder coating. Lab tests have shown the SiZr seal significantly slows the rate of corrosion and prevents the spread of corrosion when the coating surface is damaged by a dropped tool or thrown rock. By keeping the corrosion localized, the seal minimizes corrosion spreading and undercutting. In addition, the SiZr seal increases the coating adhesion and bonding to the steel thereby increasing the coating longevity. The SiZr seal can make the difference between a minor cosmetic touch up and a major coating repair.

PROTECTING THE PLANET AS WELL AS YOUR TANK!

Powder coatings are environmentally friendly as they do not contain chemical solvents, as most liquid coatings do. These solvents evaporate during the curing process and can produce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which contribute to air pollution. We also recapture all unused powder coating via specialized air filtration systems to significantly reduce particulate air pollution.

OUR GASKETS GO THE DISTANCE!

Our gaskets are formed to a precise thickness and bolt holes are in the exact location needed, eliminating bunching or overstretching which can result in leaks. To eliminate gaps between the bolts and the gasket, holes in the gasket are intentionally slightly smaller than the bolts. These factors combine to provide an outstanding gasket which will not move out of place, ooze or need to be replaced on a regular basis.

PROVEN RESULTS!

To illustrate the resilience of our coatings, the powder coating applied to our bolted steel tanks has been thoroughly tested by an independent technical laboratory and the results were outstanding!

The steel panels with the powder coating were subjected to a variety of industry recognized tests. A Coating Adhesion test was performed to ensure the powder coating will not flake off the tank and expose the bare steel. A Flexibility test and an Impact test were also performed to verify the coating durability. The final test was the Salt Spray test which simulates harsh conditions such as coastal areas and confirms our tanks will not corrode prematurely. The Salt Spray Test also verifies the coating’s resistance to corrosive liquids such as salt water. As shown in the charts below, our powder coating is extraordinarily tough.
